چکیده

INTRODUCTION For the purpose of dose control of aircrew, many dose measurements have been conducted in airplanes. In IRPA-9, we had reported data mainly obtained with a NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer(1). In the present study, however, analyses were done on data of pocket dosimeters (Silicon detectors: Aloka PDM-101 for ionizing components and PDM-303 for neutrons). As the pocket dosimeters are compact and easy to handle, their uses are certainly advantageous to collect numbers of data with small efforts. However, commercially available pocket dosimeters are designed for monitoring of nuclear facilities, and particle radiation is fully detectable only when the detector’s volume is large. Therefore, doses indicated by such small pocket dosimeters are not true, and adequate conversion procedures are necessary. Many studies have been done which seek relative dose contributions of neutrons and ionizing components. Researchers of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research conducted measurements of neutrons on board a chartered airplane in 1975, which covered throughout Japan, giving neutron dose rate of 0.38 μSv/h at 9,450m altitude and 0.083 μSv/h at 4,880m altitude. Simultaneously, they measured dose rate of ionizing components giving 0.941 μSv/h at 9,450m altitude and 0.212 μSv/h at 4,880m altitude. Combined these, the neutron dose contribution was estimated to be 40.4% at 9,450m altitude and 39.2% at 4,880m altitude, respectively. Their conclusion was that the typical neutron dose contribution would be about 40% of ionizing components’(2). However, attention is necessary that the report was made before ICRP Publication 60(3), so that the contribution of 40% should be translated to 80% now.

ALMA Memo No. 446 Levels of radiation exposure near AOS and OSF

Levels of radiation exposure in Chilean altiplano primarily due to cosmic rays were measured with pocket gamma ray dosimeters and a handy neutron rem counter. Comparison data were also taken at Antofagasta, Santiago, Mitaka, and on board the aircrafts to/from the site. Significant enhancement of dose rates was found at the ALMA site: Measured gamma ray dose rate (including ∼ 0.45mSv yr−1 contri...

Physical Investigation of Space, Dosimetry of Space Ionizing Ray Effect (Van Allen belts, Galactic Cosmic Rays and Solar particles) and Plotting Dose Map for Satellite Circular Missions

One of the main factors for satellite design is simulating of total ionizing dose due to space ionizing rays in devices used in space. By measurement of induced dose based on available data in different altitudes, expenses of designing, satellite weight and amount of needed fuel will be reduced. Optimum design of satellite for protecting satellite against ionizing radiation has considerable eff...

Brachytherapy polymer gel dosimetry with xCT

ABSTRACTBackground: Polymer gels are an emerging new class of dosimeters which are being applied to the challenges of modern radiotherapy modalities. Research on gel dosimetry involves several scientific domains, one of which is the imaging techniques with which dose data is extracted from the dosimeters. In the current work, we present our preliminary results of investigating capability of X-r...

Neutron Detection at the Extremes of Sensitivity in the Cosmic Environment

This paper compares and contrasts the use of MOSFET dosimeters and extended rem counters for neutron detection in cosmic radiation fields. These technologies have been exposed to a reference field and data are presented that demonstrate the contrasting sensitivities of these approaches. The MOSFETs are observed to be insensitive to dose levels associated with cosmic fields whilst the extended r...
